Borders Distillery 8 Years First Release – A new character from the Lowlands

Creamy caramel, honey, and dark sultanas: with the 8 Years First Release, the Borders Distillery introduces its first single malt. Eight years of maturation and a Madeira cask finish combine the gentle side of the Lowlands with fruity depth and fine spice. Limited to 10,000 bottles worldwide, this debut release is an invitation to get to know the hallmark style of the Hawick-based distillery.

The highlight: Bourbon maturation meets Madeira finish

When it launched in 2018, the Borders Distillery brought whisky distilling back to the Scottish Borders after more than 180 years. In Hawick, it draws on the region’s artisanal tradition to develop its own unique style. This eight-year-old single malt was initially matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and subsequently finished in Madeira casks. This creates a balanced interplay of rounded sweetness, ripe fruits, and spicy oak. It is free from coloring and chill filtration.

Taste profile

In the glass, the whisky glows in warm amber. Its aroma combines creamy caramel and liquid honey with fine vanilla and dark sultanas. On the palate, ripe berries and a soft sweetness follow, given shape by a subtle ginger spice. The long finish fades out with oak spice and sweet sultanas. Enjoyed neat, the balance of the two cask types can be explored at leisure; a small drop of water can further open up the fruity facets.
