E150a - caramel coloring, also known as plain caramel - is the most commonly used food additive in the whisky industry. It is legal, widely used, and in most countries does not have to be declared on the label. And it changes what you see in the glass - without you knowing it.

The official position of the industry: E150a is used in such small quantities that it has no measurable impact on taste. Large manufacturers such as Diageo or Pernod Ricard refer to internal tests that show no significant taste difference.
The critics' position: Experienced tasters report that E150a can leave a slightly bitter, caramel-like aftertaste - especially at higher dosages. Furthermore, purists argue that any interference with a natural product should be fundamentally rejected, regardless of the measurable effect.

4. Legal situation: Declaration requirement and transparency
This is unsatisfactory for consumers: In most countries - including Scotland, Ireland, and the USA - there is no obligation to declare E150a on the label. The additive is considered a technical aid, not an ingredient in the true sense.
In the EU, the legal situation is somewhat more complex: Food additives must generally be declared, but whisky falls under specific exemption regulations for spirits. The result: In most cases, buyers cannot know whether their whisky is colored or not - unless the distillery actively communicates it.

The most transparent distilleries - such as Bruichladdich with the explicit note "Natural Colour" on their bottles - voluntarily go beyond the legal requirements. This is not an obligation, but a philosophy.
5. Which distilleries do not use E150a?
The list of distilleries that deliberately forgo E150a and actively communicate this is growing - especially in the premium and craft segments:
Bruichladdich is the most famous advocate of Natural Colour. All bottlings - from the Classic Laddie to the Cask-Strength editions - are uncolored and non-chill-filtered.
Springbank also consistently refrains from coloring and chill-filtration - a stance that is part of the independent Campbeltown distillery's philosophy.
Glenfarclas actively communicates that all bottlings have natural color - the result of exclusive sherry cask maturation.
Macallan has chosen its own approach with the Colour Collection: The series explicitly celebrates the natural color variety created by sherry casks - the Macallan 12 Years Colour Collection and the Macallan 15 Years Colour Collection are prime examples of what natural maturation can create in terms of color depth.

6. How do I recognize uncolored whisky?
Since there is no declaration requirement, buyers must actively look for clues:
Label information. Terms like "Natural Colour," "No Artificial Colouring," "Unchillfiltered," or "Natural Cask Colour" are positive signals. They mean that the distillery actively refrains from using additives and communicates this.
Alcohol strength as an indicator. Whiskies with 46% vol. or more are more often bottled uncolored - because higher alcohol strengths mean less risk of cloudiness, and distilleries that forgo chill-filtration often also forgo coloring.
Color inconsistency between batches. If two bottles of the same whisky have slightly different colors, it is a sign of natural color - because E150a is used to avoid exactly this inconsistency.
Research. Many whisky enthusiast forums and databases like Whiskybase or Master of Malt list whether a bottling is colored or not. This information often comes directly from the distilleries or from community inquiries.
Ask directly. Many distilleries respond to direct inquiries by email or social media about whether their bottlings contain E150a. Transparent manufacturers respond quickly and clearly. 7. Conclusion: Color as a quality feature?
